UJUNE 30, 1988, uyoba usuku oluphawuliwe ezincwadini zeSonto lamaRoma Katolika. Ngalolosuku, umbhishobhi omkhulu waseFrance, uMarcel Lefebvre wamelana neVatican. Wagcoba ababhishobhi abane ababambelele emasikweni esonto esikoleni sakhe sobufundisi bobuKatolika eSwitzerland. Lesisenzo sabangela ukuxoshwa esontweni kukaLefebvre nalabo babhishobhi abane abasha. Sadala uqhekeko lokuqala eSontweni lamaKatolika kusukela ngo-1870. Ngalowonyaka lokho okuthiwa amaKatolika Amadala kwaqembuka esontweni eliwumsuka ngenxa yempikiswano yokungabi naphutha kukapapa.
Umsuka Wokwehlukana
Uqhekeko phakathi kweVatican nenhlangano yomBhishobhi Omkhulu uLefebvre yamaKatolika angalufuni uguquko abambelele emasikweni esonto kwase kuyisikhathi lwanda. Umsuka waloluqhekeko uhlehlela emuva eMkhandlwini Wesibili WeVatican, owawubanjwe kusukela ngo-1962 kuya ku-1965. UPapa John XXIII, owahlanganisa umkhandlu, wabeka imigomo emibili yalowomhlangano. Omunye wawubizwa ngokuthi iaggiornamento (ukulungisa), futhi omunye wawuwukuhlanganiswa kwakho konke lokho okuthiwa amasonto obuKristu.

Njengoba ewamukela ngenhliziyo yonke umbono oyisiko wamaKatolika wokuthi “ngaphandle kwesonto alukho usindiso,” uLefebvre uyaqiniseka ngokuthi okuwukuphela kwendlela “amaKristu” okuyokwenzeka ngayo ukuba aphinde abe munye eyokuba bonke abangewona amaKatolika banamathele okholweni lwamaRoma Katolika.
Ngokumelene Nenkululeko Engokwenkolo
Onyakeni ongemva kokuxoshwa kwakhe esontweni, umBhishobhi Omkhulu uLefebvre, ekhulumela amaKatolika angalufuni uguquko asekela inhlangano yakhe, wathi: “Simelene ngokuphelele nomqondo wenkululeko engokwenkolo nemiphumela yayo, ikakhulukazi ukuhlanganiswa kwamasonto, lokho mina siqu engikuthola kungemukeleki.”
Wayengethuli into entsha. Wayelandela ngokwethembeka isiko lamaKatolika. NgoAugust 15, 1932, uPapa Gregory XVI wakhipha incwadi kapapa eya kubabhishobhi iMirari vos, alahla kuyo inkululeko kanembeza “njengombono oyiphutha, noma kunalokho ubuhlanya.” Eminyakeni engamashumi amathathu nambili kamuva, uPapa Pius IX wakhipha uHlaka Lwakhe Lwamaphutha, alahla kulo umbono wokuthi “wonke umuntu ukhululekile ukwamukela nokuvuma inkolo leyo, ngezizathu ezithile, akholelwa ukuthi iyiqiniso.”
Ngokwenqaba ukuhlanganiswa kwamasonto, umBhishobhi
Omkhulu uLefebvre wayemane ebonisa ukunamathela kwakhe kulokho imfundiso yamaKatolika ekubiza ngokuthi “ubungqayizivele beSonto,” okungukuthi, kunesonto “Elilodwa, eliNgcwele, lamaKatolika nelabaPhostoli.”
Ukushunqiselwa Ngempepho YeMisa “LamaProthestani”
Izinguquko emidantini yokukhulekela eyisiko yamaKatolika okwalethwa iVatican II ziyindaba ebuhlungu ngokukhethekile kumBhishobhi Omkhulu uLefebvre nabalandeli bakhe. Lombhishobhi ohlubukayo ubheka izinguquko ezinjalo njengeziye zashintsha iMisa laba “elamaProthestani.” Akuyona nje indaba yokusebenzisa izilimi zesimanje esikhundleni sesiLatin; uLefebvre unomuzwa wokuthi okuningi kuye kwalungiswa ngombono wokukhanga amaProthestani nokuthi ngisho nangesiLatin imidanti yokukhulekela eyavunyelwa uPapa Paul VI “eyokunhlanhlatha.”
Ukuze kuqinisekiswe ukuqhubeka kweMisa lesiLatin eliyisiko, umBhishobhi Omkhulu uLefebvre wamisa isikole sobufundisi e-Ecône, eSwitzerland, ngo-1970. Sasiqondiswa iNdikimba yabaPristi kaSanta Pius X, uLefebvre ayimisa ngonyaka ofanayo. Njengoba inhlangano yakhe yayanda, wamisa ezinye izikole zobufundisi zamaKatolika angalufuni uguquko eYurophu naseNyakatho neNingizimu Melika. Kulezozikole amakhulu ezinsizwa athola ukuqeqeshelwa ubupristi ngendlela endala kakhulu.
Lombhishobhi oyisihlubuki uye wagcoba abapristi abangaphezu kuka-200 ababambelele emasikweni esonto, nakuba anqatshelwa ukwenza kanjalo uPapa Paul VI ngo-1976. Labapristi bagubha iMisa lesiLatin ezindlini zesonto nasemasontweni amaKatolika okuhlalwa kuwo ngokungemthetho.a IVatican iyavuma ukuthi uLefebvre unabalandeli abashisekayo besiko abacishe babe yizinkulungwane eziyikhulu emhlabeni wonke, kodwa ezinye izikhulu zamasonto zivuma ukuthi lelonani lisondela engxenyeni yesigidi. ULefebvre ngokwakhe uthi izigidi zamaKatolika zinemibono efana neyakhe.
Isidingo Sokuba Nomlandeli
ESontweni lamaKatolika, umbhishobhi angamisa abapristi. Nokho, upapa kuphela ongavumela ukumiswa kombhishobhi. Ngokufuna ukuba umbhishobhi amise abapristi abasha, uLefebvre osemdala waqaphela ukuthi iNdikimba yakhe yabaPristi yayizifaka engozini yokufa ngabanye ngemva kokufa kwakhe. NgoJune 30, 1988, emkhosini owawuhanjelwe izinkulungwane zabalandeli bakhe, lombhishobhi oyisihlubuki wamisa ababhishobhi abane ababambelele emasikweni esonto. Iphephandaba laseParis i-International Herald Tribune labika: “Ukumisa komBhishobhi Omkhulu uLefebvre ababhishobhi abane kusithibeza umkhandlu weVatican okwathi kuwo upapa waphakamisela ababhishobhi abangu-24 eQenjini loKhadinali. IVatican yamisa ikhonsathi ekhethekile ukuba ingabikho ukuze ibonise ‘ubuhlungu bayo obukhulu’ ngesenzo somBhishobhi Omkhulu uLefebvre. UKhadinali [waseFrance] uDecourtray wathi, ‘Wusuku lokulila.’”
Loluqhekeko oluphakathi kweSonto lamaKatolika aluzange kuphela lubangele iVatican ubuhlungu kodwa luye lwashiya izigidi zamaKatolika aqotho emhlabeni wonke zimangele futhi zididekile.
