a The Bible indicates that Joseph was alive when Jesus was 12 years old. However, Joseph was not mentioned when Jesus performed his first miracle, turning water into wine, or at any time afterward. This may mean that Joseph was dead by that time. In addition, when Jesus was on the torture stake, he asked the apostle John to care for his mother, which Jesus would not likely have done if Joseph were still alive.​—John 19:26, 27.
